More than 200,000 Canadians suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which include two similar yet distinct conditions called Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). There is no cure for IBD. In Canada, every year more than 9,200 people, including children, are diagnosed with IBD.
IBD can be diagnosed at any age, but people are typically diagnosed in their twenties. These diseases affect the digestive system and cause the intestinal tissue to become inflamed, form sores and bleed easily. Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, fatigue and diarrhea. For most, this compromises emotional well-being, derails life plans, and interferes with careers and day-to-day activities.
With so many Canadians living with IBD, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) is focused on finding the cure for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and is dedicated to educating IBD patients, their families, health professionals and the general public about the diseases.
